BORN LEYTON TOWN, ESSEX, 1894. SON OF THE LATE JOHN WILLIAM LEE (1866-1909) & ELLEN MARSHALL LEE (1866), OF 50 HIGH HOUSE, SHEFFIELD, 70 JOHN STREET, WORKSOP, 18 WENTWORTH STREET, CHURCH STREET, HULL AND 12 OWENS SQUARE, NEW GEORGE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).

SON OF A LABOURER. HIS PARENTS WERE FROM LINTON, CAMBRIDGESHIRE. HIS MOTHER WAS BORN A PAUPER AND RAISED IN A WORKHOUSE AT CAXTON.

HE  BROTHERS, WERE PERCY WALTER LEE, JOHN WILLIAM LEE AND HERBERT LEE. HE WORKED AS A LABOURER GRINDER.

HE ENLISTED AT SHEFFIELD.  SERVED AS PRIVATE, WILLIAM LEE, 3/2933, 1ST YORK & LANCASTER REGIMENT. DIED OF WOUNDS, AT NO5, GENERAL HOSPITAL, ROUEN, ON 14/02/1915, AGED 22. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE VIS EN ARTOIS MEMORIAL, FRANCE.

HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, ELLEN, AT 12 OWENS SQUARE, NEW GEORGE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).

HIS BROTHERS, HERBERT AND JOHN BOTH ENLISTED IN SHEFFIELD AFTER HIS DEATH AND JOINED THE SAME YORK & LANCASTER REGIMENT.

NOTE. WILLIAM LEE 3/2933, JOHN LEE, 34075, & HERBERT LEE, 34676, ALL PRIVATES, IN THE YORK & LANCASTER REGIMENT, ARE LISTED TOGETHER IN THE WAR PENSION RECORDS AS SONS OF ELLEN LEE, OF 6 PLEASANT PLACE, MARVEL STREET, DRYPOOL, HULL AND 12 OWENS SQUARE, NEW GEORGE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).

HIS BROTHER , PRIVATE JOHN WILLIAM LEE, 30476, 2ND YORK & LANCS, WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 18/09/1918, AGED 22. HIS BROTHER, HERBERT WAS WOUNDED IN THE WAR & DIED ON 14/02/1924. THEIR MOTHER, ELLEN CLAIMED A WAR PENSION FOR HER THREE SONS.

A NOTE ON THE WAR PENSION RECORDS ON 14/09/1921, SUGGESTS THE AUTHORITES CONSIDERED MRS ELLEN LEE, UNWORTHY OF A PENSION?

WILLIAM, HERBERT AND JOHN LEE ARE LISTED ON THE ST JOHNS NEWLAND CHURCH WW1 MEMORIAL, CLOUGH ROAD, HULL, BUT THEIR SURNAME IS SPELT AS “LEA”
