BORN ACCRINGTON, LANCASHIRE, 07/02/1883. SON OF THOMAS LEVER (1855-1892) AND LETITIA HODGSON. ONE OF EIGHT CHILDREN. HE MARRIED MARGARET ANN LITTLEWOOD, IN VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA, ON 15/03/1913. A FORMER CAPTAIN, IN THE KING’S AFRICAN RIFLES. HE WAS A RESERVIST AND MOBILISED IN AUGUST 1914. HE SERVED AS ACTING SERGEANT IN THE 2ND BATTALION, ROYAL SCOTS. AND WAS AWARDED THE DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL (DCM) ON THE 30/06/1915. THE CITATION READS, ” FOR CONSPICUOUS GALLANTRY WITH HIS MACHINE GUN SECTION. DURING A MINOR ENTERPRISE, SERGEANT LEVER HIMSELF SHOT TWO OF THE ENEMY AND WOUNDED A THIRD.”
HE WAS SERVING AS A LIEUTENANT, WITH THE 1ST BATTALION, ROYAL SCOTS, WHEN HE DIED AT MAYMYO, BENGAL, INDIA, ON 23/05/1920, AGED 40. HE LEFT £137 IN HIS WILL TO HIS WIDOW, MARGARET ANN LEVER AT 5 MIDGELY TERRACE, BEAN STREET, HULL. THIS WAS HIS CWGC ADDRESS. HE IS BURIED AT TAUKKYAN WAR CEMETERY, MAYANMAR, BURMA.
