BORN HULL 1892. ELDEST SON OF MR JOHN LILL (1859-1917) & MRS RACHEL ANN BLACKLEY (1866-1959), OF 35, PARROTT STREET, SELBY STREET, HULL, (CWGC ADDRESS). HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND ONE SISTER.
HE WAS WELL KNOWN IN FOOTBALL CIRCLES HAVING PLAYED FOR RECKITT’S RUGBY TEAM AND CENTRAL HULL. HE WORKED A LONG TIME FOR GARDEN VILLAGE, BUT FOR TWO YEARS BEFORE THE WAR WORKED AT RECKITTS’ CANISTER WORKS, STONEFERRY.
HE SERVED WITH THE 20TH HUSSARS. DIED OF WOUNDS RECEIVED AT THE DARDENELLES, 26/06/1915, aged 23.
HIS NAME WAS MISPELT AS J. HILL ON THE RECKITT’S MEMORIAL AND AS JOHN PILL ON THE ST MARYS CHURCH PILLAR, SCULCOATES LANE, HULL.
HOWEVER, HE IS ALSO LISTED ON ST MATTHEWS CHURCH ROLL OF HONOUR, BOULEVARD, HULL.
HIS DEATH AND PHOTOGRAPH ARE REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 5TH JULY 1915.
BURIED AT ALEXANDRIA (CHATBY) MILITARY AND WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY, EGYPT.
HIS BROTHER, GEORGE LILL, DIED OF WOUNDS ON 16/11/1916. ANOTHER BROTHER, THOMAS LILL, DIED IN HULL IN 1918, AGED 14 YEARS AND 10 MONTHS.
