BORN HULL 1896. THIRD SON OF JOHN EDWARD LILLEY (1864-1936) & MARY ANN TULLOCK (1865- ), OF 7, HOLDERNESS VILLAS, RHODES STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). SON OF A TRAFFIC FOREMAN. HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND THREE MARRIED SISTERS. WORKED AS AN ENGINE CLEANER AND CASUAL GOODS PORTER FOR THE NORTH EASTERN RAILWAYS BEFORE THE WAR. DESCRIBED AS 6 FOOT TALL, 37 INCH CHEST, AND 167 LBS WEIGHT.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL ON 20/11/1914. TRAINED AT BEVERLEY AND RIPON. SERVED WITH THE 12TH HULL PALS, IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. WOUNDED IN FRANCE, ON 09/08/1916. RETURNED TO DUTY. KILLED IN ACTION, AT SERRE, ON 13/11/1916, AGED 20. HE IS BURIED AT LUKE COPSE CEMETERY, FRANCE. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, JOHN. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 7TH SEPTEMBER 1917. THE THREE LILLEY SONS, LOST IN THE WAR, WERE,

HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, GEORGE EDWARD LILLEY, 22418, 10TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 15/08/1918, AGED 24.

HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, FRED LILLEY, 184495, MACHINE GUN CORPS, DIED OF WOUNDS ON 0102/1919, AT NOTTINGHAM HOSPITAL, AGED 30. SYDNEY AND FRED LILLEY ARE BOTH COMMEMORATED ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL, ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, NEWINGTON, HULL.
