BORN HULL 11/10/1887. KNOWN AS “HARRY”. SON OF JOSPEH SAMUEL LONGWORTH (1867-1941) AND ANN DEWAR (1869-1952), OF 4, MELTON TERRACE, LIME STREET, HULL. GRAND PARENTS, EDWIN & ELIZABETH MARSHALL, OF 45, SYKES STREET, HULL. HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS.
SON OF AN OIL MILL LABOURER, ONE OF SIX CHILDREN. BEFORE THE WAR HE WORKED FOR EAGLE’S OIL MILL, CLEVELAND STREET.
HE MARRIED, CATHERINE GRIFFEN (1886-1955), AT ST PHILLIPS, BILTON, ON 25/12/1909. THEY HAD TWO CHILDREN (JOSEPH, BORN 10/10/1910) & CATHERINE, BORN 24/8/1916). THEY LIVED AT 8, RICHARDSON BUILDINGS, SYKES STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS)
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, AND SERVED AS A GUNNER IN THE ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY. HE HAD BEEN IN THE ARMY FOR TWO YEARS AND TWO MONTHS. KILLED ON HE 02/08/1917, AGED 29. HE LEFT WIFE, CATHERINE & TWO YOUNG CHILDREN, AT 8 RICHARDSON’S BUILDING, SYKES STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS).
HE IS BURIED AT THE HUTS CEMETERY, BELGIUM. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN FROM HIS WIFE AND 2 CHILDREN R.I.P.”
HARRY IS LISTED ON ST. CHARLES CHURCH BORROMEO WW1 MEMORIAL & ON ST MARKS STREET ROLL OF HONOUR. HIS PHOTOGRAPH APPEARS IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 30/08/1917.
