Born Withernwick, Yorkshire, 15/02/1883. Son of Joseph Major (1857-1936) and Elizabeth Holmes (1857-1940), of Skirlaugh. Worked as a railway platelayer.
Married Ellen Johnson (1882-1963) at Hull in 1903.
He enlisted at Selby. Served as Corporal, with the 11th Northumberland Fusiliers. Killed at Zonnebeke, on 20/09/1917, aged 34. Commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
His name is recorded on St James church memorial, Ellerby, East Yorkshire.
His army effects were left to his widow, Ellen Major and four children, under 16.
