Born Swaffham, Norfolk, 1890. Son of James and Sarah Ellen Mann. of 34, St Andrew Street, Beverley (1911 Census). He had four brothers and two sisters.
Worked as a Wagoner & Farm Labour. Joined the army in 1913, receiving a Wagoner’s Bounty of £1.
Described as 5 foot, 4 inches tall, 139 lbs weight, 38 inch chest, Hazel eyes, fair hair, Church of England religion, tattoos on both arms, scar on his chin and throat.
He married Clara Clements at Beeford, Driffield, on 13 Feb 1909. They had two children, Walter and Mary Ellen and lived at Kirby, Grindalythe, Thirkleby (1911 Census).
He enlisted at York, on 17 Feb 1913. Joined the Special Reserve, Army Service Corps as a Wagoner. Transferred to the 16th Prince of Wales’s Own (West Yorkshire) Regiment, Died a Prisoner of War, in Germany, on 28 May 1917.
Buried at Niederzwehren, Stadtkreis Kassel, Hessen, Germany.
His widow Mary Clements, moved to Bewholme, Seaton, near Hull (war pension address). His name is recorded on the Beverley WW1 Memorial.
