BORN HULL 17/11/1891. SON OF JAMES MANN (1862-1932) & SARAH MANN (1867-1920), OF 21, LEE SMITH STREET, HULL (1901 CENSUS) AND 97, ARUNDEL STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). SON OF A SHIPYARD BLACKSMITH STRIKER. HIS FATHER WAS FROM LONDON AND MOTHER, FROM SHEERNESS, IN KENT. HE HAD AN ELDER SISTER LILIAN AND YOUNGER SISTER, DAISY MURIEL MANN. EDUCATED AT CROWLE STREET COUNTY COUNCIL SCHOOL, HULL. HE WORKED AS A CHEMIST’S ERRAND BOY, LIVING AT 97, ARUNDEL STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS).
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 31/12/1914. FORMERLY, 50807, NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS. HE SERVED WITH THE THE 13TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT (4TH HULL PALS). IN EGYPT FROM DECEMBER 1915. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 08/03/1916. TOOK PART IN THE BATTLES OF THE SOMME AND MANY OTHER ENGAGEMENTS. TRANSFERRED TO THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE BATTALION. HE WAS WOUNDED ON 18/09/1918 AND RETURNED TO ENGLAND. DIED OF PNEUMONIA, AT BIRMINGHAM GENERAL HOSPITAL, ON 16/11/1918. IT WAS HIS 27TH BIRTHDAY. HE INFORMED HIS SISTER, WHO WAS WITH HIM WHEN HE DIED, THAT HE HAD BEEN WITH HIS OFFICER TO INVESTIGATE A POST, AND WAS RETURNING WHEN THE ENEMY OPENED FIRE ON THEM. THEY BECAME SEPARATED. AFTER WAITING SOME TIME, HE WENT BACK IN SEARCH OF HIS OFFICER, BUT WAS UNABLE TO FIND HIM, AND WAS SHOT BY A SNIPER. HE WAS UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, JAMES MANN.
HE IS BURIED AT HULL’S HEDON ROAD CEMETERY. HIS CWGC GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “AT REST”.
