BORN HULL 1897. SON OF GEORGE MARTIN & ALICE HAYMAN, OF 14, PARROTT STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). SON A CHARWOMAN. HE HAD THREE BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS. HIS FATHER WAS A SHIP’S FIRMAN (1911 CENSUS)

HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS. POSTED ABROAD, ON 28TH DECEMBER 1915. SERVED IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. HE WAS KILLED DURING A SEVERE BOMBARDMENT OF THE FRONT LINE TRENCHES, ON 27/05/1916, AGED 19, (WHICH CAUSED MANY CASUALTIES). HIS ARMY EFFECTS AND WAR PENSION WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, ALICE.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH ON 9TH JUNE 1916.  HIS NAME IS LISTED ON ST MATTHEWS CHURCH ROH, BOULEVARD, HULL.

Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE GEORGE WILLIAM MARTIN 12/711. Born in Hull, the son of Alice Martin, and enlisted in Autumn 1914 joining the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. He trained throughout 1915 in barracks at Hornsea, Beverley and Ripon before shipping for Alexandria, Egypt on 8th December 1915. He served there until the battalion was reposted and left Port Said on 29th February 1916 bound for Marseilles and from there the train north to Armentieres and the trenches of the Western Front. George was killed in action on 27th May 1916 and buried in Sucrerie Military Cemetery.
