BORN HULL 1899. ELDEST SON OF JACK MARTIN AND LOUISA CROWDER, OF 3 BATE’S TERRACE, WEST PARADE, HULL. A LABOURER. HE HAD FOUR BROTHERS AND SISTER, LOUISA.
HE MARRIED IN OCTOBER 1916, AT ST PATRICKS CATHOLIC CHURCH, HULL. HIS WIFE MARGARET E. HAWKSWORTH, LIVED AT 4 JOELS AVENUE, HOTHAM STREET, HEDON ROAD (ARMY RECORDS ADDRESS). DESCRIBED IN HIS ARMY MEDICAL RECORDS, AS 5 FOOT, 2.5 INCHES TALL, 31.5 INCH CHEST SIZE, 96 LBS WEIGHT, POOR PHYSIQUE (“SHOULD DEVELOP”)
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 27/07/1916. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 26630 EYR. HE WENT ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE, ON 22/10/1916, PRESUMABLY TO GET MARRIED. HE LOST 28 DAYS PAY WHEN HE REJOINED HIS UNIT . HE WAS POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 14/04/1917. TRANSFERRED TO THE 14TH DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY. DIED OF GAS WOUNDS, ON 28/05/1917, AGED 19, AT NO:1 CASUALTY CLEARING STATION. HE HAD BEEN IN THE ARMY FOR ONE YEAR AND 101 DAYS.
HE LEFT ALL HIS BELONGINGS TO HIS WIFE. THEY INCLUDED HIS IDENTITY DISC, CIGARETTE CASE AND LEATHER PURSE.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH, IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 26TH JUNE 1917. *
