Martindale, Percy

Hull Pals Memorial Posts. PRIVATE PERCY MARTINDALE 10/672. Born Hull 1889, the eighth of twelve children, to Thomas and Fanny Martindale of Wycar, Haslemere Road, Bridlington. Percy was a Tailor’s Cutter prior to enlistment in September 1914. One of the original Pals, he served first in Egypt then on the Somme and survived the attack on Oppy Wood only to be killed in action during a night raid on the German trenches on 22nd June 1917. There was a fresh attack on Oppy planned for the 28th, and this raid was intended: “To kill Germans, secure identifications, and bring back Machine Guns, also to reconnoitre the enemy’s defences and note hostile MG emplacements.” One of those machine gun emplacements opened up on the raiders as they returned across No-Man’s Land following the raid. They scattered and clambered back to their trench as best they could. Percy wasn’t with them. His body was never recovered and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. He was 27 years old.
