BORN HULL 1891. SON OF FRED & MARY ELIZABETH MATTHEWS. (1911 CENSUS ADDRESS) A BOILER MAKER’S APPRENTICE.
HE SERVED IN THE 3RD COLDSTREAM GUARDS. DIED OF WOUNDS, AT LOOS, ON 08/10/1915, AGED 24.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 03/11/1915 WITH A PHOTOGRAPH. IT REPORTS THAT PTE. MATTHEWS, WAS A BOMBER, WHO HIMSELF WAS KILLED BY A BOMB BLAST DURING A GERMAN ATTACK. HE WAS WOUNDED IN THE CHEST ON THE 8TH OCTOBER AND DIED OF WOUNDS LATER THAT DAY.
HIS DEATH WAS ALSO REPORTED IN THE HULL TIMES, ON 06/11/1915, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE CHILTERN STREET ROLL OF HONOUR. HE IS ALSO COMMEMORATED ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL, ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, NEWINGTON, HULL
