BORN HULL 1896. SON OF WALKER MAYNARD (1858-1907) & EMMA NICHOLLS (1855-1931), OF 93 SOMERSCALES STREET, HULL, 4 BRIGHTON TERRACE, HOPWOOD STREET, HULL & 8 FERNDALE AVENUE, EDGECUMBE STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). ONE OF SIX CHILDREN AND THREE SONS KILLED IN THE WAR.
HE WAS AN APPRENTICE HAIRDRESSER, LIVING AT 48 SOMERSCALES STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS). THEN JOINED THE ARMY, ENLISTING IN HULL AND SERVING AS A REGULAR SOLDIER, IN INDIA, WHEN WAR BEGAN. HE ARRIVED IN FRANCE ON 25/04/1915. PROMOTED THROUGH THE RANKS. HE SERVED AS COMPANY SERGEANT MAJOR, 10267, “A” COMPANY, 1ST BORDER REGIMENT. HE WAS AWARDED CROIX DE GUERRE (CDG) FROM FRANCE, THE MILITARY MEDAL AND DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL, ALL FOR BRAVERY AT GALLIPOLI. THE DCM WAS AWARDED TO HIM FOR RESCUING TWO WOUNDED NEW ZEALAND SOLDIERS UNDER FIRE, AT GALLIPOLI. HE WAS MENTIONED IN DISPATCHES FOR DELIVERING A MESSAGE TO ALLOW HIS UNIT TO WITHDRAW SAFELY, SAVING MANY LIVES. HE WAS KILLED ON 15/10/1918, A MONTH BEFORE THE WAR ENDED, AGED 22. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH..
HE LEFT THREE SISTERS, ADA, BEATRICE AND LAURA. FOR MRS MAYNARD, SHE HAD LOST ALL THREE SONS IN THE WAR.
HE IS COMMEMORATED AT ST JOHNS CHURCH, NEWLAND, ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL WITH HIS TWO BROTHERS.
BOTH HIS BROTHERS WERE KILLED IN THE WAR. LANCE CORPORAL, SYDNEY TOWSE MAYNARD, 8TH LONDON REGIMENT (POST OFFICE RIFLES), KILLED IN ACTION, ON 20/09/1917, AGED 32. ALSO, PRIVATE, JOSEPH TOWSE MAYNARD, 32305, 2ND SOUTH STAFFORDSHIRE REGIMENT, KILLED IN ACTION ON 28/04/1917, AGED 22.
STANLEY MAYNARD IS BURIED AT DADIZEELE NEW BRITISH CEMETERY, BELGIUM. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “ONLY A BOY BUT A BRAVE ONE”.
