McClaron, Arthur

BORN HULL 24/07/1897. SON OF OSBY McCLARON, & SARAH ANNE (MOY) McCLARON OF 22 TUNIS STREET AND 14 CEDAR GROVE, EXCHANGE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). THE ELDEST OF SIX CHILDREN. HIS FATHER WAS A POSTMAN AND DIED IN 1914. EMPLOYED AS A LABOURER.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 16/08/1915. SERVED WITH THE ROYAL NAVAL VOLUNTARY RESERVE. POSTED TO THE ROYAL NAVAL DIVISION AS AN ABLE SEAMAN. THESE WERE SURPLUS SAILORS, FORMED INTO SOLDIER BATTALIONS, NAMED AFTER ADMIRALS. HE WAS DRAFTED TO FRANCE 26/06/1917, AND JOINED THE ‘HAWKE’ BATTALION, ON 22/08/1917. HE DIED AT ST JEAN, ON 10/10/1917, AGED 19.

NOTE: HIS NAME IS SPELT ‘McCLAREN’ ON THE ST MARY’S CHURCH MEMORIAL, AT SCULCOATES LANE AND “McLAREN” IN THE ROYAL NAVY CASUALTY RECORDS. .
The Hawke Bn. War Diary, states on 10/10/1917:- “Zouave Villa [St Jean]. All four Companies less one platoon per company worked on roads. The work consists chiefly of digging drains alongside the roads & slabbing the roads with planks. Casualties 2 Other Ranks killed, 2 Other Ranks wounded.” ; A Labourer ; b.24/7/1897 ; Next-of-Kin & home address: Mother, Sarah Ann, 14 Cedar Grove, Exchange Street., Beverley Road., Hull.
