BORN HULL 17/01/1890. SON OF WILLIAM McDERMOTT (1849-1913) AND MARY HOSTER (1854-1924), OF 9, BOOTH STREET, HULL. ONE OF FIVE CHILDREN. HE HAD ONE BROTHER AND THREE SISTERS. PRIOR TO WAR, HE WORKED AS A DOCK LABOURER AND FOR BLUNDELL & SPENCE, PAINT WORKS.
HE ENLISTED BEVERLEY. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 4785, EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. TRANSFERRED AS PRIVATE, 38684, 22ND NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS. THIS WAS HIS HULL DAILY MAIL ADDRESS (HDM 06/04/1919). TWO OTHER BROTHERS ALSO SERVED. HE HAD BEEN WOUNDED TWICE PREVIOUSLY AND WAS IN HOSPITAL ON THE 9TH APRIL 1917. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, DURING THE GERMAN SPRING OFFENSIVE, ON 21/03/1918, AGED 29. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MAOTHER, MARY McDERMOTT.
