Pte, Robert McDonald, 6th EYR
Withernsea WW1 Memorial, Queens Street. The memorial was erected in 1923 at a cost of £451, the funds for which were collected through public subscription. A service of dedication was held in 1924. Inscribed in four columns, are the names of sixty-four men killed in World War I.

BORN HULL 1896. SON OF ROBERT & SARAH ELIZABETH MCDONALD, OF 119 BALFOUR STREET, HULL AND 17, PROMENEDE, WITHERMSEA (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE WAS AN OFFICE BOY.

HE ENLISTED DURING THE FIRST WEEKS OF WAR AND SERVED IN THE 6TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT AS A PIONEER. HE WAS KILLED AT GALLIPOLI, ON 09/08/1915, TAKING THE TEKKE TEPPE HILL. HIS BODY WAS NEVER FOUND AND HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE HELLES MEMORIAL. TO THE MISSING. A SINGLE MAN. AGED 19.

HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, ROBERT McDONALD, WHO MOVED TO 3 MELROSE CRESCENT, WITHERNSEA AND THEN HIS MOTHER, SARAH AT 17 THE PROMENADE, WITHERNSEA (WR PENSION ADDRESS). HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE WITHERNSEA WW1 MEMORIAL.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 09/08/1916. *

HIS BROTHER, WHO WAS ONLY 16 YEARS OLD WAS SERVING AS A TRUMPETER, IN THE ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY.
