BORN HULL 1879. SON OF JOHN AND MARY McGOWAN (1840-1905), OF 1, CRAGGS COURT, PARADISE ROW, HULL. HE HAD SIX ELDER BROTHERS. BOTH HHISPARENTS WERE BORN IN IRELAND. HIS FATHER RE-MARRIED TO MARY MCGOWAN.
HE MARRIED AT ST CHARLES BOORMEO CHURCH, HULL ON 17TH JUNE 1905. HUSBAND OF ELLEN CLINTON, AT 88, WESTMINSTER AVENUE, HULL, 93, COURTNEY STREET, HULL (ARMY ADDRESS) AND 15 ELLIS TERRACE, HOLDERNESS ROAD, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). THEY HAD ONE SON, JOHN MCGOWAN WHO LIVED AT 93 COURTNEY STREET, HULL.
A FORMER DOCK LABOURER. HE HAD SERVED AS A TERRITORIAL SOLDIER WITH THE 3RD EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, FOR 13 YEARS. HIS ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIS AS 5 FOOT, 5 INCHES TALL, 129 LBS WEIGHT, 35-37 INCH CHEST, GOOD PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT, ROMAN CATHOLIC RELIGION.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 02/10/1914. TRAINED AT DALTON HOLEM, RIPON AND SALISBURY ARMY CAMPS. SERVED WITH THE 12TH EYR (HULL PALS) IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. KILLED IN ACTION, AT SERRE, ON THE SOMME, 13/11/1916, AGED 35. HE IS COMMEMORATED AT THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, SOMME, FRANCE. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, ELLEN.

PRIVATE DANIEL McGOWAN 12/828. Born in 1881, Daniel was the youngest of seven sons to John and Mary McGowan Irish immigrants to Hull in the second half of the 19th Century. A Labourer by trade he had served 13 years in the 3rd Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment as a Territorial soldier so will have been mobilized on the outbreak of war. He enlisted on 2nd October 1914 joining the 12th Battalion, 3rd Hull Pals. He married Ellen Clinton in St Charles’s Roman Catholic Church on 17th June 1905 and the couple had one son, John. Leaving both behind to fight for King and Country, Daniel was killed in action on 13th November 1916 at Beaumont Hamel on the Somme and his body was never recovered. His name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial; he was 35 years old.
