BORN HULL 07/10/1892. SON OF JOSEPH McGOWAN, (1856-1936) & KATHERINE McGOWAN, OF 9, PROSPECT PLACE, JAMES STREET, DRYPOOL, HULL (1911 CENSUS ADDRESS). ONE OF SEVEN CHILDREN.
HE MARRIED MARGARET JANE WILLIAMSON, IN 1913. THEY LIVED AT 9, GOSHER AVENUE, JAMES STREET, DRYPOOL, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). THEY HAD ONE SON, JOHN, BORN ON 25TH JULY 1914.
PRIOR TO ENLISTING HE HAD WORKED FOR THE NORTH EASTERN RAILWAYS, FOR OVER THREE YEARS, AS A CRANE LAD AND AS A SHIP PAINTER AND DOCK WORKER.
HE ENLISTED IN THE 10TH YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, (‘THE GREEN HOWARDS’) AND WAS KILLED IN ACTION, AT THE BATTLE OF LOOS, ON 28/09/1915, AGED 22. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE LOOS MEMORIAL.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 06/11/1915. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW MARGARET.
HIS NAME IS REMEMBERED ON HULL’S, ST CHARLES BORREMEO CHURCH MEMORIAL, JARRATT STREET, HULL.
