BORN HULL 1895. SON OF FREDERICK McINTOSH & MARTHA NEWLOVE (1868-1949), OF 129, CHANTERLANDS AVENUE, HULL. ONE OF NINE CHILDREN. HE WORKED AS A BUTCHERS APPRENTICE (1911 CENSUS) AND UPHOLSTERER (ARMY RECORDS).
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 29/08/1914, AGED 19 YEARS AND 2 MONTHS. DESCRIBED AS 6 FEET TALL, 151 LBS WEIGHT, 35.5 INCH CHEST, GREY EYES, BROWN HAIR, WESLEYAN RELIGION. HE INITIALLY JOINED THE ROYAL GARRISON SIEGE BATTALION. TRAINED AT WOOLWICH, AS SIGNALER, FIRST CLASS. POSTED TO EGYPT ON 30/06/1915. SERVED AS 10949, WITH THE 6TH EAST YORKSHIRE BATTALION AT GALLIPOLI. HE WAS TRANSFERRED TO FRANCE AND SERVED WITH THE 330TH SIEGE BATTERY. WOUNDED IN THE NECK AND SHOULDERS, AT THE SOMME, ON 02/09/1916. HE WAS INVALIDED HOME TO SHEFFIELD GENERAL HOSPITAL. RETURNED TO FRANCE, REJOINED HIS UNIT, AND PROMOTED TO BATTERY SERGEANT, SAME DAY ON 24/05/1917. HE WAS WOUNDED IN THE HEAD, ON 26/03/1918 DURING THE GERMAN SPRING OFFENSIVE. HE DIED OF A FRACTURED SKULL, THE FOLLOWING DAY, AGED 23.
A SINGLE MAN. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, MARTHA, WHO REQUESTED A PHOTOGRAPH OF HER SON’S GAVE, FROM THE ARMY AUTHORITIES. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR THREE YEARS AND 277 DAYS.
HE IS BURIED AT NINE ELMS BRITISH CEMETERY, BELGIUM. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “OURS THE SHADOWS. HIS THE LIGHT OF DAY”
HIS NAME IS RECORDED AS KILLED ON HULL’S GRANGE STREET WW1 SHRINE.
ONE OF HIS BROTHERS, ARTHUR ERNEST McINTOSH, DIED IN HULL, IN 1919, AGED 26.
