BORN HULL 15/11/1886. SON OF JOHN McKINLEY & CATHERINE JESSIE KEMP, THE BANK HOUSE, FERNLEY ROAD, HESSLE. EDUCATED AT HULL GRAMMAR SCHOOL. WENT TO CANADA IN 1909 & WORKED AS A LUMBER AGENT IN VANCOUVER. HE MARRIED AT CHRIST’S CHURCH, TORONTO, CANADA, ON 14/08/1909. HIS WIFE GEORGINA EYRE, WAS FROM 59 WINDSOR ROAD, BUXTON. THEY HAD 3 CHILDREN. ENLISTED IN CANADA ON OCTOBER 1914. PROMOTED TO CAPTAIN IN 1917. HE WAS LEADING AN ATTACK UNDER VERY HEAVY FIRE, WHEN HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, OUTSIDE ARRAS, ON 02/09/1918, AGED 31. HIS LEADERSHIP MEANT THE POSITION WAS TAKEN. BURIED AT WANCOURT CEMETERY, FRANCE. HE LEFT A WIDOW AND THREE CHILDREN.
HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE HULL GRAMMAR SCHOOL WW1 MEMORIAL, IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 5, AND ON THE HESSLE ROLL OF HONOUR, AT ALL SAINTS PARISH CHURCH.
