Born Lowestoft, Suffolk, 1889. Son of Mr. Duncan McLean and the late Sarah McLean, of 24, Quay St., Newport, Isle of Wight. His father was born in Victoria, Australia and worked as a Draper. John was a Dentist, living at 54 Monks Rd Lincoln (1911 Census). He enlisted in Hull. Served with the 1/4th Northumberland Fusiliers. Killed in action, on 17/09/1916, aged 39. Buried at St. Pierre Cemetery, Amiens;, France. His army effects were left to his father, Duncan and elder brother, Hugh Duncan George McLean, a chemist.
