Meeken, Alfred

BORN HULL 1897. ONLY SON OF JAMES MEEKEN  (1852-1918) & MARIA MEEKEN (1858-1924), OF 3, LINDEN GROVE, TEMPLE STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS)) AND 47, MASON STREET, HULL (PENSION LEDGER ADDRESS). WORKED AS A HULL CO-OPERATIVE PACKER. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 5.5 INCHES TALL, 35-37 INCH CHEST, GOOD VISION.

ENLISTED AT HULL WENLOCK BARRACKS, ON 20/04/1914, AGED 17 AND 5 MONTHS. CALLED UP WHEN WAR BEGAN. SERVED AS A GUNNER IN THE ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY (NORTHUMBRIAN BRIGADE). POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 19/04/1915. WOUNDED, ON 24/05/1915. LEGS AMPUTATED. DIED OF WOUNDS ON 01/06/1915, AGED 18. BURIED AT BOULOGNE CEMETERY, FRANCE. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 1 YEAR AND 430 DAYS. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOWED MOTHER.
