BORN HULL 1898. ONLY SON OF JOHN WILLIAM MILNE (1862-1939) & ELSIE ELIZABETH WORKMAN (1867=1962), OF 81, DUESBERY STREET, PRINCES AVENUE, HULL (1911 CENSUS) & 67, PARK GROVE, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). HIS FATHER WAS BORN IN HULL, HIS MOTHER WAS BORN IN RENFEW, SCOTLAND. HE HAD TWO SISTERS, ELSIE AND DORA. HIS FATHER WAS A CLERK AT THE DOCKS, FOR THE NORTH EASTERN RAILWAYS.
CLIFFORD WAS EDUCATED AT THE HULL TECHNICAL COLLEGE. HE WORKED FOR THE YORKSHIRE PENNY BANK, HULL.
ENLISTED IN HULL UNDER 18 YEARS OLD. SERVED AS A PRIVATE, WITH THE KING’S ROYAL RIFLE CORPS. HE WAS POSTED TO FRANCE IN JULY 1916. RETURNED TO ENGLAND IN JANUARY 1917, FOR OFFICER TRAINING. COMMISSIONED AND TRANSFERRED TO THE LOYAL NORTH LANCASHIRE REGIMENT, HE RETURNED TO FRANCE IN AUGUST 1917. AWARDED THE MILITARY CROSS FOR GALLANTRY. HE WAS STRUCK BY A SHELL, ON 13/05/1918, AGED 20. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 03/06/1918. *
HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE LOOS MEMORIAL, PAS DE CALAIS, FRANCE.
