BORN READING, 1892 . SON OF ALFRED AND ELIZA MITCHELL, OF 35 VICTORIA ROAD, READING, BERKSHIRE. A FORMER CHIMNEY SWEEP.
HE ENLISTED AT ALDERSHOT, ON 25/01/1909, AGED 17. HIS ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM AS 5 FOOT, 3.5 INCHES TALL, 126 LBS WEIGHT, 33 INCH CHEST, BROWN EYES, BROWN HAIR, TATTOOS ON BOTH FOREARMS, SCARS ON THE MIDDLE OF HIS FOREHEAD, AND OVER HIS LEFT EYE BROW. SERVED WITH THE 3RD BERKSHIRE REGIMENT AND TRANSFERRED TO THE 2ND LINCOLNSHIRE REGIMENT (1911 CENSUS). A PROFESSIONAL SOLDIER, WHEN WAR BEGAN. HE LIVED IN HULL AT 10, WILLIAM TERRACE, WALLER STREET, HULL (ARMY ADDRESS). HE SERVED IN FRANCE FROM 06/07/1915. WOUNDED AND RETURNED TO ENGLAND. HIS RECOVERY WAS DELAYED BY RHEUMATISM AND A ABCESS OF THE JAW WHICH REQUIRED MORE HOSPITAL TREATMENT. HIS SON DIED AGED JUST 9 MONTHS ON 28/04/1916. HE WENT ABSENT, WITHOUT PERMISSION, ON 07/12/1916, WHILE ON ACTIVE SERVICE. TRIED AND SENTENCED TO 84 DAYS DETENTION. HE REJOINED HIS UNIT IN FRANCE, ON 19/03/1917. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 16/08/1917, AGED 25. HE HAD SERVED FOR 7 YEARS AND 196 DAYS IN THE ARMY. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE TYNE COT MEMORIAL, HAINAUT, BELGIUM.
