Mitchell, Cecil Oswald

BORN HULL 1897. SON OF JOHN W. MITCHELL (1860-1931) AND VIOLETTA MITCHELL (1861-1900), OF SOUTH SHIELDS, DURHAM. HE HAD AN ELDER BROTHER, JOHN LIONEL MITCHELL AND FIVE SISTERS. HIS FATHER WAS A SHIP’S DRAUGHTSMAN, BORN IN SCOTLAND. HIS MOTHER WAS BORN IN MIDDLEBOROUGH AND DIED IN 1900, AGED 39, WHEN CECIL WAS 3 YEARS OLD.

CECIL WAS EDUCATED AT HARTON WHITBURN, REFORMATORY SCHOOL, DURHAM AND LIVING IN THE SOUTH SHILEDS POOR UNION WORKHOUSE (1911 CENSUS).

HE ENLISTED AT GLASGOW. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 11 DEC 1914. SERVED AS LANCE CORPORAL, 17214, 2ND CAMERONIAN RIFLES. KILLED IN ACTION, (LA Bautellerie Petillion), ON 31/07/1915, AGED 18.
BURIED IN FRANCE AT RUE-PETILLON MILITARY CEMETERY, FLEURBAIX.

HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, JOHN W. HIS MEDALS WERE UNCLAIMED AND DISPOSED OF ON 12 DEC 1920.

HE HAD A SISTER, MISS EVERLYN MARION MITCHELL (WAR PENSION CARD)
