Born Birkley, Northallerton, Yorkshire, 1892. A Hull City Policeman. Nephew of Mrs Muncaster, of 3 Wyndham Street, Hull.
Son of George Henry Mitchell (1868-1940) and Elizabeth Muncaster (1869- ), of 7, Bridge Street, York (CWGC address), 9 Cecilia Place, Holgate Road, York and 6 Minstergate, York (War Pension Addresses).
He had five sisters and three brothers.
Posted to France, on 22 Jan 1915. He served with the 3rd Coldstream Guards and had been at the front for one year and eight months. Killed in action, on 15/09/1916, aged 24. Commemorated on the thiepval Memorial to the missing. His army effects were left to his father, George.
His death was reported in the Hull Daily Mail, on 01/12/1916.
His brother, Gunner, William Henry Mitchell, 82231, served with “A” Bty. 107th Bde. Royal Field Artillery and as killed om 9 Aug 1917, aged 26. Buried at La Clytte Military Cemetery, Belgium. Jis grave inscription, reads, A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE SAD TO RECALL FROM FATHER & SISTERS
His brother, Private, Leonard Mitchell, 31184, served with the 8th Yorkshire & Lancashire Regiment and was shot for desertion, 10 days later on , on 19 Sep 1917, aged 19. Leonard is also buried at La Clytte Military Cemetery, Belgium.
