Born Cheetham Hill, Lancashire, 1876. Son of Charles Edward and Ellen Mitchell, of 365 Grovehill Road, Beverley. A former soldier. He enlisted in 1893. Served in South Africa, with the Manchester Regiment and was a Reservist. Discharged in 1909. In civilian life, he worked as shipyard labourer, in Beverley. He was mobilized at Beverley, on 05/10/1914. Described as 5 foot, 7 inches tall, 151 lbs weight, 38-40 inch chest, blue eyes, brown hair, Church of England religion. Posted to France, with the East Yorkshire Regiment, on 15/01/1915. Shot in the eye, on 28/02/1915. Discharged from the army as physically unfit, on 22/04/1915. Awarded Silver Badge (No:142565). Committed suicide by hanging, on 24/06/1923, aged 47.
