BORN HULL 27/06/1897. SCULCOATES. KNOWN AS “KELLY” MORTIMER. SON OF JOHN HENRY MORTIMER (1871-1935) & LUCY KIRKWOOD (1871-1961), OF 6, SOUTH VIEW, HULL ROAD, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE HAD FIVE BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS.
ENLISTED IN HULL AS FORMER 188865 ROYAL ENGINEER’S. TRANSFERRED TO THE LANCASHIRE FUSLIERS. REPORTED MISSING 22/10/1917. LATER CONFIRMED KILLED. AGED 20. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE YPRES MENIN GATE MEMORIAL, BELGIUM. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, JOHN HENRY MORTIMER.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 9TH FEBRUARY 1918, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *. HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE ANLABY WW1 MEMORIAL, ST PETER’S CHURCHYARD, WILSON STREET, ANLABY.
HIS ELDER BROTHER, LEONARD MORTIMER WORKED AS A GROCERS ASSISTANT IN THE DONCASTER, CO-OP. HE ENLISTED ON 28/08/1914 AND SERVED IN THE 5TH KING’S OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY. HE WAS WOUNDED IN THE THIGHT, ON 17/06/1915 AND DISCHARGED FROM THE ARMY, ON 25/04/1916.
