BORN HULL 1880. ONLY SON OF AUSTIN NAVEN (1836-1915) & MARY NAVEN (1841-1891). HIS PARENTS WERE BOTH BORN IN IRELAND. HIS FATHER WAS A DOCKSIDE LABOURER. HIS ONLY SISTER, ELIZABETH RICHARDS, LIVED AT 4, DRYDEN’S ENTRY, SALTHOUSE LANE, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS).

HE SEEMED TO HAVE A TURBULENT LIFE. EDUCATED AT HULL’S INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL FOR TRUANTS (1891 CENSUS). HE WAS COMMITTED TO A LUNACY ASSYLUM IN 1902. ALSO SENTENCED TO 12 MONTHS HARD LABOUR AT LEEDS IN 1906 FOR PLEADING GUILTY TO A SERIES OF THEFTS FROM THE NORTH EAST RAILWAY LINE. HIS OCCUPATION WAS DESCRIBED AS LABOURER.

HE RESIDED AND ENLISTED IN HULL. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 25TH MAY 1915. SERVED AS RIFLEMAN, WITH THE 1ST RIFLE BRIGADE. REPORTED MISSING AND KILLED, ON 01/07/1916, AGED 35. BURIED AT SERRE ROAD CEMETERY, NO; 2, SOMME, FRANCE.

HIS PARENTS DECEASED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS SISTER.

HIS NAME IS LISTED ON ST CHARLES’ BORROMEO CHURCH WW1 MEMORIAL, JARRATT STREET, HULL.
