BORN HULL 1871. SON OF GEORGE NEALE (1824-1876) AND MARY LONGMAN (1828-1892). HIS FATHER WAS A RETIRED SEAMAN, BLINDED BY GUM POWDER. WHO WORKED AS A FURNITURE BROKER. HE HAD THREE BROTHERS WHO WERE ALL SHIP FOREMEN. HE ALSO HAD FOUR SISTERS.

EDUCATED AT PRYME STREET SCHOOL. HE RECEIVED HIS SHIP MATE CERTIFICATE, ON 27TH JANUARY 1894.

HE ALSO MARRIED SELINA WOOD (1866-1929), AT SCULCOATES, HULL, IN 1894, AGED 24. HIS WIFE SELINA AND DAUGHTER, LEAN (1898-1994), LIVED AT NOS 3 & 119, BOULEVARD, HULL (1911 CENSUS). LATER SHE MOVED TO HARLAND WAY, COTTINGHAM, HULL.

JAMES NEALE WAS A MASTER SEA MARINER AND SKIPPER OF THE ARMED STEAMER “ROMEO”. LOST AT SEA, ON 03/03/1918, AGED 48.

HE LEFT £2,232, IN HIS WILL TO HIS WIDOW SELINA, AT 3, BOULEVARD, HULL (PROBATE ADDRESS).

HIS NAME IS REMEMBERED ON THE HULL MERCHANT NAVY RECORDS, TOWER HILL NAVAL MEMORIAL, LONDON AND RECORDED ON ST MATTHEWS CHURCH ROH, BOULEVARD, HULL.
Romeo was a 1,730grt defensively-armed British merchant steamer. On the 3 March 1918 when 7 miles South from Mull of Galloway she was torpedoed without warning and sunk by a submarine. 29 lives lost including Master.
