Newton, Frederick

BORN MATLOCK, DERBYSHIRE, 1885. SON OF JOHN WILLIAM NEWTON AND AND LUCY SPENDLOVE (1859-1935), OF 5 WEST VIEW, AIR STREET, HULL. HIS SISTER EDITH, LIVED 43 FOLKESTONE STREET, HULL; CHARLES AND OLIVE AT 6 HASTING AVENUE, FOLKESTONE STREET, HULL. HUSBAND OF MINNIE, FROM DFIFFIELD.

HE WORKED FOR THE BRITISH GAS LIGHT COMPAMY, HULL WITH HIS BROTHER GEORGE.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED WITH THE 2ND/5TH NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE REGIMENT. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION ON 27/09/1917, AGED 33. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, MINNIE.

HIS BROTHER, EDWARD NEWTON, COLDSTREAM GUARDS, HAD DIED OF WOUNDS ON THE SAME DAY, A YEAR BEFORE, ON 27/09/1916. HIS OTHER BROTHER, GEORGE NEWTON, ALSO DIED ON 25/04/1918, AGED 29. THE NAMES OF ALL THREE BROTHERS ARE INSCRIBED ON THE PILLARS OF ST MARY’S CHURCH, SCULCOATES LANE, HULL.

HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, JOHN NEWTON, 41261, EYR, WAS DISCHARGED FROM THE WAR (RIGHT ARM AMPUTATED) AND DIED AT HULL, IN 1926, AGED 34.

HE IS COMMEMORATED WITH GEORGE, ON THE BRITISH GAS LIGHT AND COKE COMPANY WAR MEMORIAL, KEPT AT THE FAKENHAM GAS WORKS MUSEUM, NORFOLK.
