BORN HOLMSFORD, DERBYSHIRE 1889. SON OF JOHN WILLIAM NEWTON AND LUCY SPENDLOVE (1859-1935), OF 5, AIR STREET, HULL. HE WAS ONE OF SIX CHILDREN AND THREE BROTHERS KILLED IN THE WAR.
HE WORKED WITH HIS FATHER AND BROTHERS, FREDERICK, EDWARD AND JOHN, AS GAS PURIFIERS AT THE AIR STREET, GAS WORKS, HULL (1911 CENSUS). HE THEN WORKED AT THE BUTCHER’S SHOP, AT 65, SCULCOATES LANE.
GEORGE NEWTON ENLISTED AT HULL. HE SERVED IN THE 7TH SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS AND WAS KILLED IN ACTION ON 25/04/1918, AGED 29.
HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE TYNE COT MEMORIAL, BELGIUM.
HE IS COMMEMORATED WITH HIS BROTHER FRED, ON THE BRITISH GAS LIGHT AND COKE COMPANY WAR MEMORIAL, KEPT AT THE FAKENHAM GAS WORKS MUSEUM, NORFOLK.
HIS BROTHER TED WAS ALSO KILLED IN THE WAR SERVING WITH THE COLDSTREAM GUARDS. THE NAMES OF ALL THREE BROTHERS ARE INSCRIBED ON THE PILLARS OF ST MARY’S CHURCH, SCULCOATES LANE, HULL. HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, JOHN NEWTON, 41261, EYR, WAS DISCHARGED FROM THE WAR (RIGHT ARM AMPUTATED) AND DIED AT HULL, IN 1926, AGED 34.
HIS WIFE, LILY SINGLETON (FORMERLY NEWTON) LIVED AT 65, SCULCOATES LANE, HULL AND MOVED TO 90 MOUNT STREET, FLEETWOOD. (CWGC). HIS NAME IS LISTED IN TRINITY CHURCH.
HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, EDWARD NEWTON, COLDSTREAM GUARDS, WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 26/09/1916, AGED 30.
HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, FREDERICK NEWTON, 2/5TH NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE REGIMENT, WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 27/09/1917, AGED 32.
