BORN HOGSTHORPE, LINCOLN 1857. HE MARRIED IN HULL, ON 04/10/1878. HUSBAND OF CONELIA JANE NOEL, OF 13 ETON STREET AND 71 FLINTON STREET, HULL, (CWGC ADDRESS). SKIPPER NOEL WAS ONE OF THE BEST KNOWN SKIPPERS ON HULL FISH DOCKS, HAVING GONE TO SEA AT THE AGE OF 13. HE WORKED ON THE FISH SMACKS FOR HAMLING AND CO, PICKERING & HALDANE CO, & THE GREAT NORTHERN FISH STEAMERS. HE WAS ALSO A MEMBER OF THE HULL GARDENER SOCIETY. HE WAS SKIPPER OF THE TRAWLER, ‘ERA’, SUNK BY GUNFIRE FROM THE GERMAN SUBMARINE U-69, OFF ABERDEEN. MENTIONED IN DESPATCHES (MID). HE DIED OF WOUNDS IN A GERMAN HOSPITAL IN EMDEN, THROUGH LOSS OF BLOOD.
HE LEFT A WIDOW AT 13 ETON STREET, HULL. SHE RAN A CORNER SOP AT 36 GILLETT STREET, HULL. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 9TH SEPTEMBER 1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
HE IS COMMEMORATED AS “DIED”, ON THE ETON STREET, ROLL OF HONOUR (HDM 22/09/1916).
HE ALSO LOST TWO SONS AT SEA DURING THE WAR, INCLUDING, WILLIAM NOEL, LOST AT SEA, ON 11/11/1917.
