BORN LUDDENDEN, YORKSHIRE 1896. ONLY SON OF MARY HANNAH O’DELL. HE LIVED IN HALIFAX (1911 CENSUS). HE HAD A SISTER CALLED BEATRICE.
HE WORKED AS A MILL HAND AND WOOL FEEDER.
HE ENLISTED IN HALIFAX, ON 20/10/1915, AGED 19 YEARS AND 266 DAYS. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 7.5 INCHES TALL, 142 LBS WEIGHT, 36 INCH CHEST, “GOOD” PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 04/05/1916. SERVED IN THE 2ND DUKE OF WELLINGTON’S WEST RIDING REGIMENT. WOUNDED ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME. HE DIED OF WOUNDS ON 02/07/1916, AGED 22. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 257 DAYS.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, MARY.
HE IS BURIED AT BERTRANCOURT MILITARY CEMETERY, SOMME, FRANCE.
HIS NAME IS LISTED ON ST MARYS CHURCH, LOWGATE MEMORIAL, HULL. HIS HULL CONNECTION IS UNKNOWN.
