BORN HULL 1887. SON OF ROBERT OFFICER (1842-1892) AND ANNIE OFFICER (1861-1912) OF NEW GEORGE STREET, HULL. BEFORE ENLISTING HE WORKED FOR FOULSTON’S GLASS WORKS.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED AS PRIVATE, 12438, 9TH WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 02/09/1915. HE DIED OF WOUNDS ON 14/09/1916, AT 5TH CASUALTY CLEARING STATION. HIS WOUNDS WERE RECEIVED A FEW DAYS BEFORE. HE WAS AGED 29. IN A LETTER TO HIS SISTER IT STATED, ” HE DID HIS DUTY WELL AND FAITHFULLY AND WAS BRAVE TO THE END.” SAM IS LISTED ON THE NEW GEORGE STREET MEMORIAL AS DIED OF WOUNDS. (HDM 03/11/17). HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH ON 20TH SEPTEMBER 1916.
UNMARRIED AND WITH BOTH PARENTS DESCEASED, HE SHARED HIS ARMY EFFECTS BETWEEN HIS SISTERS, MRS CLARA ATKINSON, MARY ELLEN SELLERS, AND EDITH RILEY.
HE IS RECORDED AS KILLED ON HULL’S, NEW GEORGE STREET ROLL OF HONOUR (Hull Daily Mail 03 November 1917) .
