Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE EDWARD PATTERN 10/543. Born in December 1895, Edward was the fifth of six children to Joseph and Charity Pattern of 46 Goodwin Street, Hull. Joseph Pattern was a Casting Agent, but Edward had settled on the more dependable income from being a Merchant’s Clerk. When war came Edward was among the first to sign up and fight for his King and Country, queuing in the heat of early September 1914 to put his name on the dotted line. He trained with the Pals in Yorkshire throughout 1915 before shipping for Egypt that December and on to the trenches of the Western Front the following March. Now it gets interesting. The War Records have the date of his death as 1st August 1918, but his Will was read on 30th September 1916 which seemed a little pre-emptive. Further investigations find that he actually died on the 1st August 1916. An interesting anomaly. Edward is buried at St Vaast Post Military Cemetery, Richebourg L’Avouee; He was 22 years old. In his Will he left his father £122 9s 8d.
