Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE THOMAS EDWARD PEARSON 12/410. Born in Goole, but a conundrum this one. The only Thomas E Pearson I can find born in Goole is a Thomas EDWIN Pearson, the son of James and Lilian Pearson. His grandmother was Sarah Elizabeth Brown, at 5, Kingston Terrace, Tomlinson Street, Hull (War Pension address). He is lodging in Hull at the time of the 1911 Census, and I’m wondering if he gave a false name in order to enlist underage thinking his lie would be less likely to be rumbled. Can’t say for sure, but I do know he joined the 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, 3rd Hull Pals, and was killed in action on 13th November 1916 at Serre on the Somme. He is buried in Gommecourt British Cemetery No.2 at Hebuterne, a cemetery which came into being when the Somme battlefields were cleared in 1917 so it is likely his body lay out there many months before he found a final resting place. If Thomas is indeed the man I believe him to be, he was 19 years old.
