Pendle, Albert William

BORN HULL 21/07/1894. SON OF CHARLES & AMELIA ELLINOR PENDLE (1867-1961), OF 149 MERSEY STREET, HULL (1901 CENSUS) & SAWBRIDGE, ALBERTA, CANADA. HIS FATHER HAD SERVED 26 YEARS IN THE ARMY.  THE FAMILY EMIGRATED TO ONTARIO, CANADA IN 1903 TO FARM. HE WORKED LIKE HIS FATHER AS A FARMER.

HE ENLISTED AT CALGARY, ON 26/01/1916, AGED 21. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 4 INCHES TALL, 38.5 INCH CHEST, BLUE EYES, BROWN HAIR, METHODIST RELIGION, SECOND TOE ON LEFT FOOT MISSING. SERVED AS A SAPPER, IN THE CANADIAN ENGINEERS. DIED OF GUN SHOT WOUNDS TO THE HEAD, AT THE 1/3RD HIGHLAND FIELD AMBULANCE HOSPITAL, ARRAS, ON 08/06/1918, AGED 23.
HE IS BURIED AT ECOIVRES MILITARY CEMETERY, MONT-ST. ELOI. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “IN THE FLOWER OF HIS YOUTH HE DIED FOR HONOUR & TRUTH”.

HIS FATHER, CHARLES, AND BROTHERS GEORGE, WALTER, FRANK & FRED, ALSO SERVED IN THE CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE. HIS FATHER ALSO HAD FOUR BROTHERS SERVING AND ONE IN THE NAY AT JUTLAND. THE FAMILY WERE FEATURED IN THE CALGARY HERALD.
