ARTHUR WORKED AS A GENERAL LABOURER. HE MARRIED AT HULL, IN 1911. HIS WIFE, HOPE EMPSON (BORN 2/9/1881) & THREE SONS, LIVED AT 8, DUKE’S TERRACE, MARMADUKE STREET, HESSLE ROAD, HULL AND AND 10, REDMIRE AVENUE, WITTY STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).
HE ENLISTED AT BEVERLEY, ON 14/09/1914. SERVED AS PRIVATE, 12656, 7TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 20/06/1916, AGED 29. BURIED AT FRICOURT MILITARY CEMETERY, ON THE SOMME.
HIS YOUNGER BROTHER, PRIVATE, SYDNEY PICK, 11TH EYR, HAD BEEN KILLED ON THE SOMME TWO WEEKS EARLIER, AGED 21.
ARTHUR’S ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, HOPE, WHO LATER REMARRIED. SHE WAS AWARDED A WEEKLY WAR PENSION FROM 01/01/1917, OF 20 SHILLINGS AND SIXPENCE, FOR HERSELF AND THREE CHILDREN. ELIZABETH WARDLE BECAME GUARDIAN OF THE THREE BOYS, AT 10, REDMIRE AVENUE, WITTY STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).
