Hull Pals Memorial Post. PRIVATE AMOS POLLARD 11/349. Born in Walkden, Lancashire in 1893, Amos was the eldest of three sons to Oliver and Mary Pollard of 3 Scaife Street, York. A Grocer’s Apprentice prior to the war, Amos enlisted in Hull in September 1914, queuing in the long, uneven lines of late summer with men and boys anxious to get their share of the great ‘European Adventure’. After serving in Egypt and on the Somme, he was wounded and returned to Blighty to recover. Alas he died of those wounds at home on 10th January 1917. Amos Pollard is buried in York Cemetery; he was 23 years old. Meanwhile, back in France, the Germans were slowly, and secretly, withdrawing to more secure positions specially prepared to be almost impregnable to attack- the Hindenburg Line. If 1916 had been a bloody year for the Pals, then 1917 was set to be no better.
