BORN HORNSEA, 1894. SON OF JANE MARLOW (GINNY) POOLEY ( 1873-1960), OF 34, SOUTHGATE, HORNSEA. EMPLOYED AS A GROCER’S VANMAN (1911 CENSUS) AND AT THE HORNSEA STEAM LAUNDRY. HE MARRIED CECILIA AGNES SUTTON (1895-1916) AT ST NICHOLAS CHURCH, HORNSEA, ON 14/11/1915. THEY LIVED AT 1 FERN AVENUE, MIDDLEBURG STREET, HULL AND THEN 23, ABERDEEN STREET, HULL (ARMY ADDRESS). DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 10 INCHES TALL, 147 LBS WEIGHT, 37-39 INCH CHEST. HE WORKED AS A MILL HAND, AT THE BRITISH OIL AND CAKE MILLS, CLEVELAND STREET, HULL, PRESSING GUN COTTON FOR THE ADMIRALTY, BEFORE JOINING THE WAR.
HE ENLISTED ON 01/12/1915 AFTER HIS WIFE’S DEATH. CALLED UP ON 23/06/1916. TRAINED AT WITHERNSEA. POSTED TO FRANCE ON 29/12/1916. SERVED WITH THE HULL PALS. BECAME A PRISONER OF WAR. CAPTURED AT OPPY WOOD. DIED FROM “SPANISH FLU”, ON THE TROOPSHIP, “SS LA COUR”, DURING THE WAY HOME FROM GERMANY.
HE LEFT A YOUNG DAUGHTER, CECELIA AGNES (BORN 7/2/1916), IN THE CARE OF HIS UNMARRIED MOTHER. ALSO LEFT BROTHER, FRANK AND SISTERS, LAURA CUSSONS, IN CANADA, AND DORIS POOLEY.
HE HAD SERVED FOR IN THE ARMY FOR 3 YEARS AND 21 DAYS AND IS BURIED AT COPENHAGEN WESTERN CEMETERY, DENMARK. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 10/01/1919.*
