BORN NORWICH 1887. ONLY SON OF ALFRED FREDERICK POWLEY (1860-1907) AND JANE ELIZA BUCKINGHAM (1861-1942), OF RIVERSIDE, REEDHAM, NORFOLK (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE HAD THREE SISTERS. LIVED AND WORKED IN HULL.
HE ENLISTED AT GREAT YARMOUTH. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 16/08/1914. SERVED AS A GUNNER, WITH THE ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY. AWARDED THE DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL (DCM), ON 30/06/1915, AS A GUNNER, “FOR GALLANT CONDUCT ON 10/01/1915, WHEN BEING LOOK OUT MAN ON THE CINDER HEAP. HE WAS WOUNDED BY A HIGH EXPLOSIVE SHELL, WITHIN TWO YARDS OF HIM, BUT CONTINUED HIS WORK. ” PROMOTED TO SERGEANT, 26757, RGA 26TH HEAVY BATTERY. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 14/10/1918, AGED 31.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, JANE ELIZA, SISTERS, BERTHA, LILIAN AND KATE.
HE IS BURIED AT AEROPLANE CEMETERY, BELGIUM. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 05/02/1919.
