BORN HULL 1897. ONLY SURVIVING SON OF EDWIN QUIBELL (1869-1938) & SOPHIE ELIZABETH SPRING (1872-1960). SISTERS ELEANOR & JOAN QUIBELL. HIS FATHER STARTED QUIBELL’S. A MAJOR BUILDING CONTRACTOR, ON BEVERLEY ROAD, HULL.
HE WAS AN OLD HYMERIAN. PLAYED FOOTBALL FOR THE COLLEGE AND LATER OF THE CRANBROOK FOOTBALL CLUB, A SPRIGHTLY NEWLAND ORGANISATION WHO ALL ENLISTED TOGETHER AT THE START OF THE WAR. HE WAS ALSO AN EXCELLENT CRICKETER AND PLAYED FOR NORTH CAVE CRICKET CLUB. FROM YOUTH HE WAS CLOSELY CONNECTED WITH THE NEWLAND CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH AND BECAME A SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER THERE. IN BUSINESS LIFE HE WAS ON THE STAFF OF MESSRS. LATUS & CO. HIS WINNING AND CHEERFUL PERSONALITY WON HIM MANY FRIENDS. HIS FATHER EDWIN WAS MANAGING DIRECTOR OF LOCAL BUILDERS MESSRS, QUIBELL, SON & GREENWOOD LTD WHO BUILT THE HULL CENOTAPH.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL. GEORGE QUIBELL WAS PART OF THE EXPEDITIONARY FORCE TO EGYPT. SERVED AS SECOND LIEUTENAT, IN THE 10TH MIDDLESEX REGIMENT (Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex) Regiment, 10TH Territorial Battalion). HE WAS OFFICALLY REPORTED KILLED ON 26TH MARCH 1917, AGED 20.
GEORGE’S DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 5TH APRIL 1917, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH.
HIS FATHER BUILT THE HULL CENTOTAPH MEMORIAL IN 1924.
