Ramsey, Allan McDonald

BORN HULL 1874. SON OF CAPTAIN WILLIAM & MARGARET RAMSEY, 41 CECIL STREET, HULL. HUSBAND OF  WIFE ISOBEL RAMSEY & 6 CHILDREN. THE FAMILY LIVED IN ABERDEEN. SUNK BY MINE, OFF THE YARMOUTH COAST. ONLY TWO CREW SURVIVED.

ALAN HAD SERVED AS AN APPRENTICE IN HULL, WORKING FOR J HOLMES FISHING SMACKS IN NEPTUNE STREET. HE GRADUATED TO BECOME A MUCH RESPECTED SKIPPER AND WAS PRAISED BY THE ADMIRALTY. HE WAS MASTER OF THE TRAWLER, “DHOON” AND KILLED BY A MINE EXPLOSION, ON 24/11/1916, AGED 42. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 4TH DECEMBER 1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH.*

Dhoon, built by Smith’s Dock Co., Ltd., Middlesbrough in 1916 and used at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy trawler of 275 tons. On November 24th, 1916, Dhoon was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-19 (Alfred Nitzsche), near the Newarp lightvessel. 12 persons were killed.
