BORN HULL 1899. ONLY SON OF HERBERT RANSON (1871-1910) & EMMA TRYPHENA DAWSON (1866-1953), OF 41 WATERLOO STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HIS FATHER RAN WAS A WATCH MAKER AND RAN A JEWELLERY REPAIR SHOP. HE HAD THREE SISTERS. HE SERVED AS PRIVATE, 155469, MACHINE GUN COPRS. HE DIED ON 22/12/1920 AGED 20. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, WHO DIED AT 51 DUESBERY STREET, HULL ON 23/02/1953.
WILLIAM IS LISTED ON THE CLIFTON STREET SCHOOL ROLL OF HONOUR. THERE ARE NO COMMONWEALTH WAR RECORDS.

“The Clifton Street School Roll of Honour lists George Dukes, RFA, and William Ransom, MGC, as died, but there are no regimental or Commonwealth War Records of their deaths”
Both George and William died after their discharge from the army, details below. The plaque at Clifton School was put up by the Old Cliftonians Sports and Social Club so the individuals will probably have been known to the organisers and their deaths linked to their injuries/illness sustained in the war. Why they are not recorded by the CWGC I don’t know. Here’s the information:
George Dukes – died 5th January 1922 Death notice in Hull Daily Mail 6th January 1922
George Dukes enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery (Service number 755684) on 21/06/1915. At some point he was wounded and taken prisoner. He was discharged from the Army on 28/02/1919 and was awarded the Silver War Badge (discharged from army because of serious wounds making him unfit for service). The Sliver War Badge Roll originally had him discharged from Hospital but this has been manually amended to P. of W. Rec Camp Ripon. His death three years later may have been linked to the wounds he received.
William Herbert Ransom, Machine Gun Corps Service Number 155469, died December 22nd 1920, death notice Hull Daily Mail Dec 23rd 1920. It sounds like he may have been ill for a while as the death notice, although difficult to read refers to a “long illness bravely bourne”. The Medal Rolls for the British War and Victory Medals record him as being discharged from the army on 02/03/1920. He doesn’t appear on the Silver War Badge Roll.
