Born Hull, 16/02/1894. Only son of Samuel Ruddiforth & Annie Gardner Ruddiforth, at 14, Beaconsfield Street, Queens Road, Hull (CWGC address) and 32, Grafton street, Hull (War Pension address). Educated at Lambert Street school, Hull. Was employed in the advertising Department of the ‘Hull Daily Mail’ and ‘Hull Times. Joined the Royal Army Medical Corps, Territorial Force in October 1911. mobilized at the start of the war. Served with the British Expeditionary Force, in France from 18/04/1915. He had served in France for over three years without a scratch. He had just returned from home leave, two weeks before his death. He was wounded on the 12/04/1918, while assisting the wounded at Hazebrouck. He died of his wounds, at the No:1 New Zealand Hospital, at Wittes, France, on 28/04/1918, aged 24. Unmarried. His army effects were sent to his mother, Annie. He is buried at the Longunesse Military Cemetery, France. His grave inscription, reads, “DEARLY LOVED. ONE OF BRITAIN’S HEROES WHO GAVE HIS LIFE FOR ALL”.
Before the war he worked for the advertising Department of the Hull Daily Mail, where he was well known and popular. His death was reported with his photograph in the Hull daily Mail on the 3rd May 1918.
He is recorded in the De Ruvigny Roll of Honour, Volume 4.
His brothers, Pte. R Ruddiforth EYR & Driver. Ruddiforth RFA, lived at 1 Kates Terrace, Sculcoates Lane, and are both recorded on the Sculcoates Street memorial.
