George and Jack Sanders, of Tyne Street, Hull

BORN HULL 02/09/1889. SON OF THE GEORGE SANDERS (1859-1924) & ANNIE MERCHANT (1861-1942), OF 9 DAY STREET, HULL (1901 CENSUS) & 8, SYDNEY GROVE, TYNE STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). SON OF A FISHERMAN FROM DEVON. ONE OF NINE CHILDREN. FORMERLY A CLERK FOR THE HULL & BARNSLEY RAILWAYS.

AN ORIGINAL HULL PAL. GEORGE JOINED THE HULL COMMERCIALS AT THE OUTBREAK OF WAR AS PRIVATE, 106, 10TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE TRANSFERRED LATER AS LANCE CORPORAL, TO THE ‘ACCRINGTON PALS’. HE WAS REPORTED MISSING THEN CONFIRMED KILLED ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE SOMME BATTLE, AGED 27. HE HAD BEEN ON ACTIVE SERVICE FOR ONE YEAR AND TEN MONTHS.

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 4TH MAY 1917, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
HIS BROTHERS, HARRY SERVED IN THE RAMC IN INDIA, THOMAS & ERNEST, BOTH ON MINESWEEPERS AND CORPORAL, JACK MARCHANT SANDERS, 1/4TH EYR, WAS KILLED AT ARRAS, ON 23/04/1917, AGED 19
