BORN HULL 1901. SON OF JENNIE SAWNEY, OF 57 ALBANY STREET, HULL. HE DROWNED IN THE RIVER TRENT,WHILE BUILDING A BRIDGE, WHEN THE RIVER WAS IN FLOOD AND DANGEROUS. HIS BODY WAS NOT RECOVERED UNTIL MAY 1919.
HE HAD A BRILLIANT SCHOLASTIC CAREER AT HYMERS. HE WON THE FIRST OPEN SCHOLARSHIP TO ST JOHN’S COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE, IN MATHEMATICS. IN ADDITION AWARDED, THE BURY FERRIES EXHIBITION, THE HULL CITY COUNCIL EXHIBITION AND THE JOHN HYMERS UNIVERSITY EXHIBITION.
HE DIED WITHIN A FEW HOURS OF ENDING HIS MILITARY TRAINING AND IS LISTED ON HYMERS COLLEGE MEMORIAL. HIS DEATH AND PHOTOGRAPH WERE REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 21ST MAY 1919. *
