BORN KEADBY, YORKSHIRE, 1890. SON OF RICHARD SCHOFILED (1864-1922) AND ANNIE ELIZABETH STEPHENSON (1865-1943), OF 12 WILLIAM TERRACE, MASON STREET, HULL A LABOURER.
HE ENLISTED AT GOOLE, 07/06/1915. POSTED TO FRANCE 21/12/1915. GIVEN 7 DAYS FIELD NO:1 PUNISHMENT FOR MISCONDUCT ON 15/02/1916. WOUNDED IN RIGHT THIGH BY A BULLET ON 04/06/1916. RETURNED TO UNIT TWO DAYS LATER. KILLED IN ACTION ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME, 01/07/1916, AGED 26. HIS BODY WAS NOT RECOVERED AND HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING. HE WAS UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE RETURNED TO HIS MOTHER ANNIE. hIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 27/07/1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
