BORN 13/11/1895. GERMAN SUBJECT. SON OF JOHN SCHULTZ (1844-1918) & MARY ANN SCHULTZ, HULL. AS A CHILD HE SPENT FIVE YEARS, AT A WEST YORKSHIRE REFORMATORY SCHOOL, FOR STEALING A QUANTITY OF SHOE ORNAMENTS. HOWEVER, THE HEADMASTER OF OSBORNE STREET SCHOOL, GAVE HIM A GOOD CHARACTER REFERENCE. HE WAS DESCRIBED AS FAIR HAIR, BLUE EYES, “V FAIR INTELLIGENCE”, WHO COULD READ AND WRITE. HIS RELIGION WAS GIVEN AS CHURCH OF ENGLAND. HIS MOTHER, ELIZABETH BARTH DIED IN 1900, LEAVING FIVE CHILDREN. HIS FATHER, WAS A CHAIR MAKER, AND WAS “ADDICTED TO DRINK”.
HIS FATHER MARRIED MARY, IN HULL, IN 1907. WALTER LEFT SCHOOL ON 19/07/1913, AGED 17. HE WORKED FOR SCHULTZ & CO., TAILORS, AT HULL, MARKET PLACE.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED AS A GUNNER, IN THE 160TH ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY. HE DIED AT 54TH CASUALTY CLEARING STATION, ON 17/06/1918, AGED 22. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS SIBLINGS, HERBERT, LILY, ANNIE PEARSON, CLAUDE AND WILLIAM.
WALTER SCHULTZ IS BURIED IN FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “SADLY MISSED BY ALL WHO KNEW HIM”.
